Rolf Hastrup’s relationship with the Caltech Y was marked by steadfast dedication, thoughtful leadership, and a deep sense of responsibility to students and to the institution he cared about so much.
Rolf, along with his wife Gunilla, served as members of the Caltech Y Board for many years, on and off, from the 1970s through 2016. Over those decades, Rolf took on several key leadership roles, including Treasurer, Vice Chair, and Chair. In each role, he brought careful judgment, integrity, and a quiet strength that helped guide the Y through seasons of growth and change.
I had the privilege of working with both Rolf and Gunilla, and I always appreciated Rolf’s thoughtfulness, his steady presence, and his deep dedication to the Caltech Y. In fact, I was surprised to learn that he had not been involved with the Y as a student. Given the depth of his later commitment, one might easily have assumed he had been shaped by it from the very beginning. Instead, his involvement grew over time, evidence that his loyalty to the Y was not nostalgic, but intentional and chosen.

He had a remarkable attention to detail and a steady commitment to doing things well. Whether reviewing financial reports, examining endowment records, or helping shape long-term planning, Rolf approached every responsibility with diligence and care.
Together, Rolf and Gunilla also served as editors of the Caltech Y newsletter, believing deeply in the importance of keeping donors and alumni informed and connected. They understood that stories of students, what they were learning, leading, and building, deserved to be shared.
Rolf passed away peacefully on August 6, 2025, at the age of 95. He will be missed but remembered for his devotion to family, to community, and to the institutions he served with such care.
