< Back to all programs LEAP Project Donation Drive $0 Collecting donations until April 30th To Participate: https://leap.caltech.edu/action About The LEAP Project will be working with two high schools from La Puente this quarter, Glen Wilson High School and William Workman High School. The donation drive will be launched on Monday, March 3rd 2025, and will last throughout the Winter and early Spring quarter. We will be reaching out to the entire Caltech campus as well as local businesses that have expressed interest in providing donations. Items requested include: Electronic balance Glassware (Graduate cylinders, Erlenmeyer flasks, beakers, burets) Water bath Hot plates Microcentrifuge Stirring hot plate Micropipettes and tips pH meter Thin layer or liquid chromatography Stereo or Compound microscopes Incubators and Ovens Protective equipment (gloves, lab coats) Interested donors can reach out to LEAP by filling up a survey form on https://leap.caltech.edu/action . < Back to all programs Stargazing Campout Free * Saturday, May 24th - 3:00 pm to Sunday, May 25th - 3:00 PM To Participate: https://forms.gle/FuTarU8sFCvyTuhZ7 About Join us for a quick stargazing trip to one of Southern California's best stargazing spots, Blair Valley in Anza-Borrego Desert State park! We will be visiting on a new moon, and so with enough luck we will have perfect stargazing conditions. Additionally, those interested can opt in to join us for a stop in San Diego before our return to campus later on Sunday. We will plan on going to the beach and visiting some San Diego landmarks. The trip will depart Saturday afternoon and return by 3PM on Sunday, or later if opting for the San Diego portion. Participants will have to arrange for their own transportation or travel with others - details and contact information will be shared among participants so you can arrange for carpools. There is no fee, however you should plan to help cover some of the cost for gas / vehicle wear of the vehicle you will be in ($30-$40 each is suggested) and for purchasing meals while going and returning. Grad Student Rajashik Tarfder's worldview was shaped by his Bengali grandmother's stories – of colonial displacement, partition sorrow, and of Indians scattered across the globe. Further exploration led him to discover "slavery of a different name" – over a million peasants shipped around the world as indentured laborers replacing the African slaves who had been emancipated. Today, over a million South Africans come from Indian ancestry, their tragedy compounded by feelings of alienation from the modern Indian population while they are, at the same time, seen as aliens in these countries. Join us to hear stories from Rajashik's journey to South Africa with the Caltech Y - Hastrup Award - where he listened to the stories of the Indian diaspora and their complex ties to their ancestral and adopted homelands. Lessons on Global Citizenship, Thanks to the Stefanko Fund For over 30 years, the Caltech Y has empowered students to spend their breaks giving back and broadening their perspectives. Both undergraduate and graduate students have trekked to Costa Rica to help newly born sea turtles escape predators, flown to Alabama and Georgia to learn about the history of the U.S. Civil Rights movement, and traveled to Peru to build a concrete staircase for residents living in hillside communities. More students have enjoyed these opportunities thanks to Caltech alumnus Mike Stefanko (BS ʼ70) and his wife, Paula Stefanko. The couple has subsidized these excursions, known as Alternative Spring Break (ASB), for the past 12 years. The Frank and Elsie Stefanko Fund, named in honor of Mike Stefanko’s deceased parents, offsets a significant portion of the cost, including lodging, airfare, and most meals. Frank & Elsie Stefanko Every year, Stefanko has lunch with ASB participants, and each time, he is impressed with the impact a one-week trip has on students. “The international programs are especially immersive,” Stefanko says. “Caltech Y members meet with locals, learn about their culture, and sometimes live with them. Students help make their lives better, and in turn, they give Caltech students a different perspective on what it means to be happy and self-sufficient.” As an undergraduate, Stefanko competed on the swim and water polo teams, served on the board of the Associated Students of the California Institute of Technology (ASCIT), and sang in the Blacker House choir. He connected with the Caltech Y years later as an alumnus. Mike, Paula, and the Caltech Y all share a commitment to social impact. “The world needs science nerds, but it also needs science ambassadors,” Stefanko says. “It needs people who can bring science and scientific thinking into the community to make a difference. The Caltech Y is doing an important job in nurturing these ambassadors.” Stefanko could also be considered a science ambassador. He put his Caltech education and quantitative skills to use as an instructor for college students and at-risk teenagers. Then, he switched professions and worked as an administrator at a legal nonprofit and a data analyst for the Orange County Probation Department. He considers founding and managing the O.C. District Attorney’s Office’s Research Unit one of his greatest career achievements. There, he created a data-informed culture that helped leaders more effectively allocate resources, respond to public critiques, and report to grant funders. These wide-ranging experiences sparked an interest in criminal justice. Although semi-retired, Stefanko remains committed to the issue and volunteers as a website administrator for the Association for Criminal Justice Research (California). Mike with students who attended the Hawaii ASB trip Building on the Stefankos’ generosity, the Caltech Y wants to make travel even more accessible to students. The Global Perspectives Fund is a new fundraising initiative that will ensure students of all backgrounds have access to these experiences. Funds will support ASB, the Washington D.C., Science Policy Trip, Global Policy Trip, and other programs. The Caltech Y is seeking gifts of all sizes from Caltech alumni, faculty, and staff as well as Pasadena community members to reach its $15,000 goal. “No student should be denied these transformative learning and serving experiences due to financial barriers,” says Caltech Y board Chair Cindy Bengston. She currently serves as the Senior Vice President and Global Head of Academies and University Alliances at SAP, a multinational software corporation with offices worldwide. Prior to joining SAP, Karina was the Global Lead for Cloud AI at Google where her primary role was to facilitate research collaborations in AI between Google Cloud and top academic researchers. Karina came to Google from California Institute of Technology where she served as executive director for corporate partnerships; and previously served at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory which is operated by Caltech for NASA. She also worked in the Obama administration, where she was appointed the first technology transfer coordinator at the U.S. Department of Energy and served as a member of the White House Speaker Bureau to promote STEM careers to women and girls. Karina earned her master’s degree and Ph.D. in Aeronautics from California Institute of Technology and her bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from University of Rhode Island. She has been a life-long advocate for women and historically underrepresented minorities in STEM fields. Karina is a member of the Board of Directors for Dragonfly Energy and also serves on several non-profit boards including, the Pasadena Educational Foundation, University of Rhode Island, and IU Group, a holding company behind IU - International University of Applied Sciences, Germany’s largest private university group. Karina also serves on the Advisory committee for the Engineering Directorate for the National Science Foundation (NSF). She has received numerous national recognitions and awards and is a registered U.S. Patent Agent. Karina is a thought leader and inspirational speaker on diversity, inclusion, and women in tech. She resides in Southern California and has three amazing daughters. About Mario: Dr. Mario E. Munich is the Chief Technology Officer at Embodied, Inc. where he manages Research & Development and engineering efforts including hardware, software and manufacturing with a focus on human-robot interaction, natural language processing and artificial intelligence. He was previously Senior Vice President of Research & Development at iRobot Corp. where he managed the research and technology development efforts with special focus on robot navigation, computer vision, and artificial intelligence. He previously worked as the CTO of Evolution Robotics where he developed object recognition, and navigation and mapping algorithms for consumer robotics. He received the degree of Electronic Engineer (with honors) from the National University of Rosario, Argentina and the M.S. and the Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena. His PhD work focused on developing novel Human-Machine Interfaces using video technology and computer vision techniques. His research interests include computer vision, machine learning, artificial intelligence, sensors for robots, autonomous navigation, and human-robotic interaction. View All Other Pages (94) Nick von Gersdorff < Back Nick von Gersdorff Board Chair Nick (MS ‘06) started his career in hydropower as an undergraduate student at Harvey Mudd analyzing critical infrastructure, which paved the way to his current position as Southern California Edison’s Chief Dam Safety Engineer. He is passionate about traveling and fostering green energy internationally and is currently working to develop hydropower in the country of Georgia. At Caltech, he has been a practitioner of AI tools for offices such as Tech Transfer and a researcher into homomorphic encryption for creation of full-on user privacy tools. When he is not researching or studying, he enjoys training Olympic weightlifting for fun, reading sci-fi stories and djembe drumming. His first contact with the Y was through Liz Jackman who was his first-year mentor. Through Liz, he attended some meetings and signed up to be a Rise Tutor at John Muir high school. He has also enjoyed programs such as ASB trips to Costa Rica and MAD(Make A Difference) day. His future aspirations for the Y are to expose more students to the Y and have them participate in its various programs, while also researching logistics into possible Y safaris to Africa as he patiently awaits to launch a community impact non-profit organization of his own back in his home country of Kenya.
