- Leo Carillo State Park Day Hike
< Back to all programs Leo Carillo State Park Day Hike Free* August 2nd To Participate: https://forms.gle/zzvkWw7c9Jw6nGPr5 About Join the Caltech Y Outdoors for a day hike exploring the Leo Carrillo State Park and Beach! This will be a mellow hike. We will start with a short trail up the ridge to get views of the coastline, followed by a hike along the beach. We will depart from Caltech at 8am and return by 4pm. Please bring sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and at least 2L of water. Please also pack a light lunch and snacks. You must provide your own transportation to and from the trail, and carpooling is encouraged. We will send out group contacts to help participants self-organize carpools. Developed through the Rise Program, it aims to strengthen early math skills and spark curiosity in math and science. In partnership with STEAM:Coders and STEMulate Learning, students rotate through engaging stations in math, art, and coding, and enjoy interactive science demos and lab tours. Volunteer opportunities: 9:00–10:30 AM – Support students at math-focused stations featuring games, activities, and worksheets. (Minimum commitment: 4 sessions) 1:00–2:00 PM – Lead or assist with science demonstrations, hands-on activities, lab tours, or outdoor play. (Minimum commitment: one day/one hour) This is a fun and rewarding opportunity to give back, inspire young learners, and share your passion for STEM. Volunteers are needed to help make this spectacular event a reality. For every shift completed, the Pasadena Showcase donates funds to the Caltech Y. As a thank you, volunteers who complete a 2-hour shift will receive a complimentary ticket to tour the showcase house immediately following their shift (a $40 value). Interested in volunteering? < Back to all programs Explore LA Tickets: LA Philharmonic - Gershwin & Strauss Ticets: $24 Saturday | May 24th | 8:00 PM To Participate: https://forms.gle/JM2PZQytrALQ6KF58 About On Saturday, May 24th at 8:00 pm, join the Caltech Y for Gershwin & Strauss presented by the LA Philharmonic Orchestra at the magnificent Walt Disney Concert Hall! Jean-Yves Thibaudet performs Gershwin’s Concerto in F, a showpiece he says exudes the “utter joy” that leaves every member of the audience and orchestra with a “smile on their face.” Richard Strauss’ Also sprach Zarathustra was made famous by Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey , but beyond the brass and bombast lies a symphonic poem that channels nature, science, and questions of the unseen world. Teddy Abrams leads the LA Phil in this orchestral showpiece and Caroline Shaw’s The Observatory, inspired by the experience of looking down at Los Angeles and up at the night sky from Griffith Observatory. Tickets are limited and first-come first-serve with sign-up opening on Thursday, May 15 at 4:00 pm. Those who receive tickets will be notified, and sent an invoice in order to make payment electronically. < Back to all programs LEAP Project Donation Drive $0 Collecting donations until April 30th To Participate: https://leap.caltech.edu/action About The LEAP Project will be working with two high schools from La Puente this quarter, Glen Wilson High School and William Workman High School. The donation drive will be launched on Monday, March 3rd 2025, and will last throughout the Winter and early Spring quarter. We will be reaching out to the entire Caltech campus as well as local businesses that have expressed interest in providing donations. Items requested include: Electronic balance Glassware (Graduate cylinders, Erlenmeyer flasks, beakers, burets) Water bath Hot plates Microcentrifuge Stirring hot plate Micropipettes and tips pH meter Thin layer or liquid chromatography Stereo or Compound microscopes Incubators and Ovens Protective equipment (gloves, lab coats) Interested donors can reach out to LEAP by filling up a survey form on https://leap.caltech.edu/action . < Back to all programs Stargazing Campout Free * Saturday, May 24th - 3:00 pm to Sunday, May 25th - 3:00 PM To Participate: https://forms.gle/FuTarU8sFCvyTuhZ7 About Join us for a quick stargazing trip to one of Southern California's best stargazing spots, Blair Valley in Anza-Borrego Desert State park! We will be visiting on a new moon, and so with enough luck we will have perfect stargazing conditions. Additionally, those interested can opt in to join us for a stop in San Diego before our return to campus later on Sunday. We will plan on going to the beach and visiting some San Diego landmarks. The trip will depart Saturday afternoon and return by 3PM on Sunday, or later if opting for the San Diego portion. Participants will have to arrange for their own transportation or travel with others - details and contact information will be shared among participants so you can arrange for carpools. There is no fee, however you should plan to help cover some of the cost for gas / vehicle wear of the vehicle you will be in ($30-$40 each is suggested) and for purchasing meals while going and returning.
