The Patrick Hummel and Harry Gray Travel Fund

Patrick Hummel

The Patrick Hummel and Harry Gray Travel Fund was established as a joint gift from Carla and Paul Hummel, Patrick Hummel, and Shirley and Harry Gray, Arnold O. Beckman Professor of Chemistry and Founding Director of the Beckman Institute. The endowed fund supports undergraduate travel opportunities that promote professional and leadership development and broadens students' perspective as engaged, responsible citizens of the world.

Support

Grants will be awarded to support:

  1. Travel to academic conferences for the purpose of presenting papers or actively participating in workshops, symposia

  2. Travel to professional conferences focused on developing students' leadership skills (e.g., National Conference for College Women Student Leaders)

  3. Travel to conferences/meetings that support the increased participation and impact of underrepresented groups in STEM fields (e.g., Conferences for Undergraduate Women in Physics, the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing, the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students, etc.)

Undergraduate students may apply for a grant in the range of $500-$1,000 for domestic travel and $1,000-$2,000 for international travel. The number of awards granted per funding cycle will vary based on the number of applications received and the amount of funds requested.

Proposal Guidelines

  • Proposals must come from currently enrolled undergraduate students in good academic standing.

  • Priority will be given to applicants requesting funds for academic conferences and to present research. Conferences that include sessions on leadership or service in the context of the professional/academic field are preferred.

  • Proposals should be one to two pages maximum and should follow the following format:

    1. Contact information, including name, campus mail stop, email address

    2. Meeting to be attended (title, date, and location)

    3. Briefly describe the paper to be presented or the nature of the academic or leadership activity, the purpose of the meeting, and how the meeting will further enhance your professional and leadership development

    4. Provide an itemized budget with specific plans and estimated expenses

      1. List specific items and indicate if they are known costs or estimates. Please include copies of price quotes that you have obtained.

      2. Indicate total amount requested.

    5. Please tell us of any other funding sources to support your travel.

      1. List any approved funding sources and specify amount.

Application and Selection Process

  • Proposals are due to the Caltech Y on the second week of January. Proposals are reviewed annually.

  • Award decisions will be made by representatives of the Caltech Y, the Chemistry Department, the Student-Faculty Programs Office, and the Caltech Y Executive Committee and will be announced prior to the Housner Student Discovery Fund proposal deadline.

  • Selected students will be invited to meet with the donors.

 

Expectation of Awardees

Students who are awarded a travel grant are expected to:

  • Use awarded funds only as indicated in the proposed budget

  • Submit proof of attendance to the Caltech Y

  • Seek out sessions focused on skill-building, networking, leadership and service

  • Forfeit and return unused funds to the Caltech Y

  • Report on their travel experience upon their return in a mutually agreed upon format (e.g., write a blog post, submit an article for the Caltech Y's monthly newsletter, or present a summary report to the selection committee, student Executive Committee or to the Board of Directors)
