The Rise Program is an afterschool math and science-focused tutoring program that serves public school students between grades 8 and 12 and is designed to help students gain greater competency in math foundations, improve skills in math and science and prepare students for college-level math and science. The tutoring is provided by Caltech undergraduate and graduate students and takes place on the Caltech campus Monday-Thursday and at John Muir High School on Thursdays.

Volunteer at Hathaway Sycamores, a group that supports local underprivileged but motivated high school students in the LA community. Tutors have the opportunity to help students in various science and math subjects. No formal training necessary, just sign up for the days you can come. The service trip departs from Caltech and includes ~1.5 hours of tutoring and ~30 minutes of travel time.

Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday | 3:00 - 5:00 PM | Pasadena 

Work with 8th grade students from Marshall Fundamental through the STARS program.  Marshall has identified 8th graders that are failing math and in danger of not graduating.  Tutors will work with small groups of students to complete five week packets of math which will go towards changing a failing grade into a passing grade and allow the student to graduate. (Packets will be graded by a credentialed teacher). Tutors commit to at least one day a week for 5 weeks.

Marshall Credit Recovery Program

1st Saturday of the month | 8:30 - 11:00 AM | Pasadena 

Kids Reading to Succeed (KRS) works with Pasadena youth to encourage a love of reading and to improve literacy skills. Volunteers are paired with a student who is encouraged to read aloud from a book chosen from the KRS library followed by interactive and fun presentation based on the monthly theme.

3rd Saturday of the month | 5:15 - 9:15 PM | Pasadena



Prepare and serve dinner to the residents at Union Station Adult Center in Pasadena. Food and materials are provided. The Adult Center provides shelter, meals and supportive services for more than 150 homeless men and women each year. For more info and to RSVP email

The Caltech Y is partners with agencies from all over Pasadena and the greater LA region for one day of community service. All members of the Caltech community are invited to participate in one of a variety of community service projects at the Boys and Girls Club, Monrovia Canyon, Habitat for Humanity, LA Food Bank, Hillsides Home for Children, and many more sites. You can choose to work with kids or animals, do construction or outdoor projects or visit with the elderly. Projects are led by students and happens during sprint term.
