Wisconsin State Representative Spencer Black
as special guest speaker of the
Spring Friends Dinner on April 24th, 2008.

Representative Black, a leading environmental advocate, author of numerous environmental laws, and proud father of a current Caltech undergraduate, will shed some light on the role of science and environmental politics. As we ask ourselves, “What have we learned since the first Earth Day?”, Spencer Black will share his insights as ranking member of the Assembly’s Natural Resource Committee and personal stories of his mentor and friend, Gaylord Nelson, the founder of Earth Day.

Representative Black joins the Caltech Y in a campus-wide celebration of Earth Day with a special discussion on environmental politics, progress, and sustainability.

Recognition of Spencer Black’s environmental efforts include being named Legislator of the Year by the Wisconsin Wildlife Federation and Environmentalist of the Year by the Audubon Society. Representative Black received the Environmental Excellence Award from the Midwest Renewable Energy Association and is the first person from Wisconsin to win the Nature Conservancy’s Public Service Award. Environmental legislation authored by Black includes the Lower Wisconsin Riverway, the statewide recycling program, groundwater protection rules and the endangered species program.

Representative Black attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison and has two graduate degrees - a Masters of Science in Urban and Regional Planning and a Masters of Arts in Public Policy and Administration. His son, Tim, is a student at the California Institute of Technology.
