Can I get paid for doing community service?
Only students with FEDERAL work-study can be paid for their community service. Students with CIT work-study (usually International students) or students with no work-study at all cannot be paid (they can still volunteer, however). If you are unsure if you have received federal work-study, please check with Financial Aid.
First-year students CANNOT get paid until second term. When the second term begins, they simply need to get a signed permission-to-work letter from the Dean’s Office.
How much to I get paid?
Federal work-study recipients are paid $20.00/hr for their community service work.
What do I need to do?
Students with federal work-study need to fill out 3 forms: Student Employee Data Sheet, I-9 and W-4. The I-9 requires three forms of identification (See back of I-9 form). If you have worked at Caltech previously, you may already have an I-9 and W-4 on file – in which case, you will only need to complete a Student Employee Data Sheet.
How do I get paid?
You will either enter your time online or fill out a paper timecard every two weeks, according to the pay schedule. Contact the Caltech Y to find out which method applies. Paychecks are sent to your primary work assignment every other Friday. You will not be paid until your paperwork (3 forms) has been completed and processed by Employee Records.
Where can I work?
You can chose from Caltech Y Ongoing Community Service Projects or Annual Community Service Events where you volunteer with others from the Caltech community and transportation is often provided. You can also branch out on your own and volunteer at a local organization allowing you to tailor your community service to your interest area. Students interested in these opportunities should browse through the List of Community Service Agencies and email ljackman@caltech.edu for more information.
