There are many opportunities for community service through the Caltech Y. All are welcome and encouraged to volunteer. Students receiving Federal Work Study can also earn $20 an hour for doing community service through the Caltech Y! There are a number of options available both on and off campus. If you are interested in receiving email announcements of upcoming community service projects, you can self subscribe to the Community Service Interest List at www.caltechy.org/lists/. Hathaway Sycamores Tutoring (every Friday from September to May) -Volunteer at Hathaway-Sycamores, a group that supports local underprivileged but motivated high school students. Some of the subjects being tutored are AP Chemistry, AP Physics, and AP Calculus. For more information email xjin@caltech.edu or jkishi@caltech.edu.
Caltech Y Front Desk (ongoing) - Work during office hours (9am-5pm) at the Caltech Y. Duties include checking out equipment, answering phones, making reservations, and other duties as assigned. For more information email ljackman@caltech.edu.
Kids Reading to Succeed- Help kids read the first Saturday of every month from 8:30am -11:30am. For more information email Liz Jackman at ljackman@caltech.edu
Union Station (3rd Saturday of every month) – Prepare and serve dinner to the homeless at Union Station Homeless Shelter in Pasadena. The time commitment is 5:45 PM – 9:30 PM. Food and materials are provided. Sign up announcements go through the Community Service Email Interest List. You can self subscribe to the Community Service Interest List at www.caltechy.org/lists/
RISE Tutoring (Monday-Thursday) - Tutor Pasadena Unified School District students in math and science at Caltech. For more information visit http://caltechy.org/programs_services/tutoring/
Alternative Spring Break - Explore a new place, meet new people, serve a community, and have fun! Join other Caltech students for a non-traditional spring break experience and volunteer for a worthy cause. From the desert to the Sierras to more local urban experiences, there are a number of different community service trips that change from year to year.
MAD Day - Our biggest community service event of the year with close to 20 community service projects. Projects are lead by other students and are 3.5 to 7 hours depending on the project. Meals and transportation are provided.
Community Service Fair (November) - Find out about some of the many opportunities for community service and advocacy in the area.

The Caltech Y also partners with a number of organizations in the area where students can volunteer and/or receive Federal Work Study. Agencies deal with a variety of issues such as homelessness, children, healthcare, education, and many more. Students interested in these opportunities should browse through the List of Community Service Agencies. Students are responsible for contacting the organization directly to set up volunteer projects. To receive Federal Work Study for hours worked please visit the Caltech Y to fill out the necessary paperwork. If you are interested in other community service agencies there is also the possibility to request adding the organization to the Caltech Y list. To make such requests email ljackman@caltech.edu.
